Paul Watson: My Ship Is A Vegan Vessel

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 20th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Environment-Eco-Green, Food & Drink, Recipes.

Sea Shepherd Renames Ship Steve Irwin

If we were eco pirates sailing the seas, we would have just hit the jackpot booty!

Paul Watson has given the LA Times an interview in which he tells all about how the crew eats vegan during their missions on the Steve Irwin boat to save whales on the Animal Planet series Whale Wars.

And there are recipes!

Fluffy vegan pancakes, chocolate banana cake, and Sea Shepherd chili!

On What the Sea Shepherd Crew Eats:
“I run my ship as a vegan vessel. It’s not for animal rights reasons but to set an example and to try and get people to think about the connection between what they eat and what we’re doing to the oceans, because it’s quite simple, really. I personally feel that it’s the most important cause on the planet; more important than anything else for the simple reason as this – if the oceans die then we all die. And we’ve removed 90% of the fish from the oceans. Marine ecosystems are in serious situation and it could collapse.”

On Who Cooks:
“I’ve got a great vegan cook, Laura Dakin. She’s worked part-time for Anthony Kiedis of the Chili Peppers, then she comes and works with us. She’s been with us for three years. We don’t force people. We just set an example, and say, “Try this while you’re on board, see what you think.” People think we’re some wacky animal-rights group. We’re not. We’re a conservation organization but what we’re saying is, look, we’ve got to be very aware of what we eat if you’re going to call yourself an environmentalist or a conservationist.”

Top Chef Sends Veg Chef Home: Seitan Worshippers Plot Revenge

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 20th, 2009 in Chefs, Reality TV, Videos.

Top Chef is not off to a good start.

On a recent episode, the cheftestants were asked to cook a dish based on one of their vices and Jen chose a hot and spicy dish because of her temper.

Oh, did we mention the dish was chile relleno stuffed with seitan?

Many of the other cheftestants and judges weren’t exactly thrilled with the vegetarian dish and in the end Jen got sent home.

Wonder if it had anything to do with that ex vegetarian now hamburger hussy Padma Lakshmi?

Watch the clip for a recap of the episode.

Fred Mascherino is one of several celebrities that has a pair of MacBeth vegan shoes named in his honor.

But Fred doesn’t think he’s the vegan shoe god and seems a little embarrassed knowing foot gear was designed with him in mind.

From eujacksonville.com:

“Yeah, that was pretty ridiculous [laughs]. Those things should be reserved for Michael Jordan. But I’ve been working with the Macbeth Shoe Company for many years. I always wore their shoes, I always liked what their company was about. And they’ve always had shoes that were vegan, including the glue so I could wear a cool shoe that didn’t have leather or animal products as a part of it. I was always pretty supportive of what they were doing and we were friends at this point and they said, “Oh, let’s do a shoe together,” and I think it was a pretty big success because the shoe that I did kinda caught on and I guess people liked it. It was a win-win thing for everybody.”

Fred says factory farming really opens his eyes about the effects of mass produced meat on the environment.

“My reasons for being vegan are definitely not against people who disagree and I’m definitely not against the farmer and his cow. It’s more about the whole factory industry and the unhealthy part of it. A lot of things changed when we started doing factory farming and I kinda just don’t want any part of that. I also do it for environmental reasons because even just eating less meat is one way you can actually help lower global warming.”

Kourtney Kardashian Craving Fruits During Pregnancy

Kourtney Kardashian signs autographs and poses for pictures after an appearance on The Wendy Williams Show

If you keep up with the Kardashians, you know by now that Kourtney is carrying a bun in her oven by none other than her player boyfriend Scott Disick.

We’ve expressed disappointment in the number of vegetarian women who give into meat cravings during pregnancy, so it comes as a pleasant surprise that non vegetarian Kourtney’s hormones are calling for fruit.

“You know what’s weird? Like, I always thought like if I was pregnant I would eat like, McDonalds or like, Taco Bell all day long or something. I’m not craving those things, like, I’ve been craving like cold stuff like frozen yogurt and smoothies and like, I’ve been eating way more fruit then I used to eat before.”

Good. Stay away from McEvil and the arches Kourtney.

Better yet, follow Khloe’s lead and work towards going vegetarian.

Stella McCartney Admired Mom Linda McCartney’s Vegetarian Style

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 20th, 2009 in Fashion, Food & Drink.

Paul McCartney

Stella McCartney just revealed she thinks her mom was one of the greatest in the world.

Not only does Stella admire Linda McCartney, but she aims to be just as free-spirited and compassionate about all life just like dear ol’ mom.

Stella told Harper’s Bazaar:

“She had a strong voice and was very ahead of her time. The connection she made between how people treat animals and the environment is proving to be very significant.”

Stella probably “borrowed” a few things from her mom’s closet now and then.

“I love the way my mother wore clothes. She used to always cut her own hair and wore very little make-up, and she just did things differently. She used to wear odd socks but then she also wore beautiful suits and little dresses with platform shoes. That is sort of how people dress now, so she was very modern and ahead of her time.”

Do you have a parent who influenced your veg lifestyle decisions tremendously?

Heather Mills vegan cafe VBites opens in Hove, Brighton, UK

Treehugger has compiled a list of their favorite celebrity green businesses and vegan star Heather Mills made the cut.

Not only does Heather run her little vegan cafe and restaurant in the UK called V Bites, she also recently purchased Redwood Wholesale Foods.

And that just makes Heather greenalicious!

From Treehugger.com:

“Last month we reported that Heather Mills opened Vbites Café, a seaside vegan establishment in the U.K. offering unique meatless meats and vegan favorites–accompanied by vegan and organic wines and beers. At the time, we had also caught wind of a potential new vegan frozen food business. While we at TreeHugger were skeptical over the motives, Heather Mills’ Web site now confirms that Mills is indeed the new owner of U.K.-based Redwood Wholesale Foods. And she isn’t stopping there: The company hopes to soon bring their meat-free brands to the U.S. for distribution.”

It’s no surprise a vegetarian business made the eco cut.

Meat’s not green and never has been.

Go Heather for making green so darn tasty!
