The Pretenders Perform In Madrid

“They torture these chickens. No one else is defending these animals.”

“If people are still going to McDonald’s, can McDonald’s stop torturing these beautiful animals that they’re making their profits out of?”

—-Chrissie Hynde, during recent protests against McDonald’s  in Utah for the way the PETA alleges the company slaughters its chickens, including having their legs broken, throats slashed, and scalded in de-feathering tanks.

PETA wants McDonald’s to switch to chickens that are killed via Controlled Atmosphere Killing-a process that cuts off the animal’s oxygen until it dies.

Do you tune into The Secret Life of the American Teenager?

If so, you might have caught Montell Williams’ daughter, Wyntergrace Williams, in a primetime ad meant to urge Congress to ensure vegetarian options are always available in school lunches.

Wyntergrace is now giving dad a run for his daytime talk show money!

The campaign brought to you by the folks at the Physicians’ Committee For Responsible Medicine, is an effort to get changes made to the Child Nutrition Act, which sets the standards for school lunches.

Other vegetarian names like actor Tobey Maguire and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone have lobbied Congress for these changes as well.

The Simpsons turn Angolan for Africas DStv

David Mirkin, executive producer for The Simpsons has pulled in some great celebrities to guest star on the show including Leonard DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, and Paul McCartney.

McCartney was quite adamant about the conditions of his appearance, though.

He agreed to only do it if Mirkin kept Lisa Simpson a vegetarian for every episode.

“It’s actually Paul McCartney who was responsible for another permanent change,” Mirkin said. “When I asked him to do the vegetarian episode, he agreed but made me promise to keep Lisa as a vegetarian – and I was happy to comply with that because I’m a vegetarian too! Every time I see him, he always checks – and he’s always surrounded by nine or ten lawyers, so it’s quite frightening!”

Lisa is a veg. Apu is a veg. David is a veg. We’re hoping Marge’s twin sisters make the plunge next!

Michelle Forbes Can’t Believe Animals Are Sacrificed

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, August 25th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

25th Annual Television Critics Association Awards - Arrivals

Michelle Forbes plays the villainous character Maryann Forrester on HBO’s True Blood.

Forbes’ character may do some barbaric things on the show, but according to Forbes, it’s just based on the “moral construct” of her group.

In other words, everybody’s cool with it!

Forbes, a vegetarian, used this example to explain how she can’t believe people are still eating animals, because based on her moral code, they shouldn’t be.

From blackbookmag.com:

“I do believe that she’s a character that’s all about perspective. If you think that this is an immortal being. She’s been around since the beginning of time. She’s lived in certain periods of our humanity, where there were people who would sit and watch other men tear each other apart for sport. Children were sacrificed. It’s not unheard of in history. In her mind, she’s seen it all. I think what’s great about the storyline is that it challenges our belief system. You and I can sit here in 2009 and say it’s outrageous that someone would sacrifice humans. My belief system, as a vegetarian, can’t believe that animals are being sacrificed. I stand by that in Maryann’s mind, there’s nothing malevolent. She has a different way of looking at the world.”

Elizabeth Berkley Gets Real Reading Done At Real Food Daily

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 24th, 2009 in Actresses, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Elizabeth Berkley spotted in West Hollywood!

Elizabeth Berkley was spotted at Real Food Daily in LA taking up two tables.

Apparently Elizabeth had lots of books with her that day as she had her dinner.

Maybe she thought her meal would take a really, really, really long time to cook.

At vegan restaurant Real Food Daily, Elizabeth doesn’t have to worry about leaving her business card that urges restaurants to add more veg food to the menu.

Wonder if she’s switched to leaving entire books instead?

Brian Boitano Made What We Wouldn’t Have

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 24th, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

34th Annual Daytime Creative Arts & Entertainment Emmy Awards - Arrivals

So yesterday we gave a short notice to remind everyone to tune into the Food Network channel for the new Brian Boitano cooking show, What Would Brian Boitano Make?

Brian had told Mother Nature Network he prefers following a near vegetarian diet to be more eco-friendly.

However, for the first episode, we’re going to be that nasty ice skating judge that gives the 6 when everyone else gives a 9.9. Here’s why.

Brian opened up going gaga over a crab meat appetizer. Sure, there were vegetables mixed with it, but we would have preferred a bean spread.

His next dish was a little more promising-sun dried tomatoes and goat cheese skewers. This doesn’t please the vegans, but at least his left flesh off the stick.

Finally, he almost impaired our judgement when he announced his last dish for the day was polenta with spicy sausage and red peppers.

For someone who follows a “mostly vegetarian” diet, Boitano seemed a little off course for the day.

Hopefully, he won’t make the show a Gwyneth Paltrow, “I say I eat mostly vegetarian but show meaty dishes in my public projects” kind of thing.
