Alice Walker Trades Pig Eyes For Plain Water During Sickness

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, June 29th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Authors.

Broadway Opening Of The Color Purple - After Party

Alice Walker recently blogged about her experience with a naturopath doctor and natural treatments, one of which included medicine made from pigs’ eyes.

In discomfort, Alice, a vegetarian, tried the remedy for awhile, but eventually couldn’t block out the images of the animals she was putting in her body.

“One time she gave me a remedy made from pigs’ eyes, but that was as extreme as it got, and she had misgivings, being, I think, vegetarian. I took the pills for a while, in desperation, but couldn’t keep it up because of a mental image of a pig whose eyes twinkled at me. When I told her what had happened, she chuckled and said, Well, drink lots of water.”

The debate over the use of animals for medicine will probably never end until we have found a way recreate any animal “part” or devised a method for testing the effects of pharmaceuticals on humans without using laboratory animals.

Some are absolutely against any animal use or testing in medicine, while others keep their morals by ensuring they purchase pills manufactured without gelatin.

Where do you stand on the issue of animals and medicine?

Kathy Freston Addresses Vegs Who “Pooh Pooh” Meat-Free Monday

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, June 29th, 2009 in Authors.

Kathy Freston Celebrates Her New Book Quantum Wellness

Kathy Freston, author of Quantum Wellness Cleanse, has expressed before that vegetarians and vegans need to be a little nicer to the omnivores.

She advocates utilizing non vegan businesses, for example, when a vegan product is offered to encourage those businesses to expand their cruelty-free options.

Now that Meat-Free Mondays are on the calendar, she acknowledges that vegetarians and vegans will point their fingers to the other six days of the week and demand change, but feels they shouldn’t be too harsh because every step towards less meat is better.

So don’t “pooh pooh” only one day of meat-free eating, okay guys?

“And I know that some vegetarians pooh pooh Meatless Monday as not enough. I’m sympathetic to that view, but I think it’s unnecessarily strident. For people who think that going totally vegetarian is too challenging, the Meatless Monday campaign offers a gentle entrée into the idea of eating without eating animals. My hope is that people will use the campaign as a stepping stone–first one meatless day per week, then three, then five, then seven. As we lean into meatless eating–switching out more and more meat meals for meatless meals–we end up feeling better, both physically and ethically.”

Perez Hilton Gone Vegetarian? Not Quite.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, June 29th, 2009 in Authors, Business, Pop Culture.

House Of Mollinari Birthday Extravaganza

Our ears should be ringing off the hook now, because someone’s been talking about us!

Cleveland Vegetarian Examiner Kaitlin Miller wrote up a post on Vegetarian Star she titled, “Has Perez Hilton landed a vegetarian site? Not Quite!”

Kaitlin was humorously referring to who’s basically the founder of gossip websites, Mario Armando Lavandeira, better know as Perez Hilton.com.

“Vegetarianstar.com is a celebrity gossip site very closely mocking Perez Hilton’s popular trash-talking yet humorous blog, except that it is strictly relating to vegetarianism. Fans can track a plethora of different categories, submit polls, comment on photos, articles, and breaking news, and browse around for the newest gossip.”

“Eye-catching headlines that contain big Hollywood names are attracting viewers worldwide, like “Heather Mills Making Vegan Dog Food,” or “Jimmy Kimmel Does The Raunchy Tofu on Late Night Television.” I don’t know about you, but seeing the words “raunchy” and “tofu” together definitely intrigues me.”

Yeah, tofu does it for us, too Kaitlin.

Sorry to disappoint those who thought this was a post talking about Perez Hilton getting his raunchy on with tofu. But when he does…you better believe we’ll be telling you about it.

Besides the whole Freedom of Speech thing, NYC, and baseball, name some great things about the United States of America.

Add Leilani Munter to your list, as the vegetarian race car driver who races with divisions of both NASCAR and IndyCar has made Reader’s Digest’s 10 Reasons to Love Our Country.

“Münter, 33, who’s both a stock-car and open-wheel driver, has made it her mission to “green” big-time auto racing—which, at 100 million strong, may have the most enthusiastic fan base on the planet. Her goals: renewable biofuels and recycled tires for the cars and recycling programs at the tracks. For doubters, she has a message: “Never underestimate a vegetarian hippie chick with a race car.””

Leilani consistently delivers her message as an environmentalist through public speaking engagements, interviews, and her website, carbonfreegirl.com.

Not to mention she’s lightening her carbon footprint every time she sits down at the dinner table and consumes a plant based meal.

“The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world,” she said, “are the ones who end up doing it.”

What can we say? We love those crazy girls.
