Ruben Studdard Fallen Veg Idol

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, November 24th, 2008 in Male Singers, Not So Vegetarian.

AMERICAN IDOL GRAND FINALE 2008, DAY 1

Ruben Studdard is in veg rehab. The “American Idol” Season 2 winner who was very public about how his vegetarian diet helped him lose weight has been lapsing a little. But he’s trying to get, ahem, clean.

When asked by The Sunday Paper if he was still keeping up with his vegetarian lifestyle, he laughed and replied, “Currently trying to return.”

What’s the deal with this? Ruben Studdard, who raved about Morningstar Farms products, vegetarian buffalo wings, and PF Chang’s Buddha’s Feast and Tofu Lettuce Wraps turned to meat for some satisfaction?

Former Idol contestant Kellie Pickler recently became veg with the help of vegetarian Idol winner Carrie Underwood. Is this some kind of karma thing, where we lose one and gain another. Surely there’s enough room in the Idol Vegetarian Club?

Maybe it was because of his new wife’s eating habits. Boo! We can’t have any beefy Yoko Ono’s breaking up the veg band.

So we will anxiously await Ruben’s return to our side. Have any of you ever fallen off the veg bandwagon for any reason?

Pat Thetic Says Best Thing About Being Vegan Is Hot Chicks

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, November 23rd, 2008 in Bands, Male Musicians, Videos.

Pat Thetic of the band Anti-Flag says the best thing about being vegan is the hot chicks who hang with him because of it. No, really. So what if he quickly said he was kidding after making the comment? It’s only a scheme to keep every other guy from snatching his hot chicks. Russell Simmons used yoga to check out hot chicks. With yoga and veganism, you’ll never spend another night dateless again.

Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival 2006 - Day 1

We brought you the, cough, cough, delicious details of Chris Walla’s Peanut Butter Veggie Sausage Toast Recipe. Yes, that’s right. Peanut butter and vegetarian sausage. Mmmm…yummy.

We have not been brave enough to attempt it yet, but the folks over at Sprig.com have. And they posted a pretty picture. Not only that, but they’re saying it tastes “pretty good.”

So hats off to them for being so brave, and if you’re still interested in being brave, have at it for the recipe.

Ink Not Mink Star Henk Schiffmacher Did Tattoos For The Stars

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, November 22nd, 2008 in Misc Artists and Performers, Videos.

Tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher has created skin designs for celebrities such as members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Robbie Williams, and Curt Cobain.

Now he’s becoming a celebrity himself, starring in PETA Netherlands’ ad “Ink, Not Mink.”

“I’ve seen the slaughter of silver foxes with electrodes and the gassing of minks – and piles of dead bodies,” Schiffmacher said. “And it ain’t a pretty sight.”

“We hope that Henk’s ad will remind people that, while getting a tattoo can sting a bit, we can choose whether or not to get one,” said PETA Europe Director Robbie LeBlanc. “Animals tortured and killed for their skins and fur don’t have a choice – and they pay with their lives.”

We’ve included the video Schiffmacher stars in, but only our Dutch speaking friends and others who know the language will be able to understand it. However, we can all understand pain, regardless of the language we speak. And we can all at least see Schiffmacher making a difference.

Sarah Palin Has No Worries As Tom Turkey Gets Beheaded

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, November 21st, 2008 in Not So Vegetarian, Politicians, Videos.

Sarah Palin is truly into animal horror shows. From shooting wolves from planes to toting her Real Women Hunt Moose bag, it’s safe to say she won’t be honored by any animal rights groups soon.

Her latest stunt involves giving a media interview live with turkeys being slaughtered in the background. What’s even creepier is when she was asked if that was an appropriate backdrop, she replied, “No worries.”

Corey Feldman Will Walk In Winter Wonderland For Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, November 21st, 2008 in Actors.

CUN's 9th Annual Awards Celebration And Viewing Dinner - Show

Farm Sanctuary, an organization created to combat issues of animal abuse on farms,  will be holding a benefit on December 4th, 2008 at the Art Director’s Club in New York City.

“Winter Wonderland,” will feature gourmet food from NYC’s best vegetarian restaurants, a silent auction, and of course, celebrities to mingle with, like Corey Feldman.

Sure hope he’s wearing more than what he was in the Give Peas a Chance ad, which played upon one John Lennon and Yoko Ono did years ago. New York’s a little cold in December for that, Corey.

Other notables you might get to rub elbows with are Jennifer Coolidge, Peter Max, Patrick McDonnell, Tatum O’Neal,
Daniela Sea, Ally Sheedy, Princess Superstar, Loretta Swit, and
Justin Theroux.

General admission tickets are $100, so if you’re a young, freshly graduated from college adult or pinching pennies, put some back from your paycheck you got TODAY. It’s for a great cause and will put you in the mood for the season.

And who knows? Corey might not be wearing much after all.

Paltrow Pretty Much Vegetarian Except For Big Fat Turkey

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, November 21st, 2008 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian.

Two Lovers Paris Premiere

Gwyneth Paltrow took some heat not too long ago for posing draped in fur in an ad for Tod’s clothing. She’s recently given a public apology to her green and vegetarian fans and PETA, saying the fur was thrown over her at the last minute and she thought it was fake.

She told PETA, her and her husband, Coldplay front man Chris Martin, are “pretty much vegetarians,” and “we know it’s the best diet for us and our kids, and of course for animals and the environment.”

However, it seems as if she should have followed up the statement with, “Except for Thanksgiving, when we chow down on that fat bird.” In an article in the Huffington Post, she writes:

“Turkey will always be the main event of Thanksgiving (at least in my house) and a whole turkey is the way to go if you’re feeding at least 12. But if your party is smaller, the stuffed turkey breast turns out to be a great halfway point. Brining it overnight insures that you don’t need to baste it and it has a quick cooking time. Why should things be any less festive if dinner is just for two? I came up with these stuffed turkey burgers which were a giant hit in my house. They are the perfect solution for anyone who isn’t feeding a big group (or for a big group that wants to try something different!).”

Not only is she admitting to bringing bird into her home during Thanksgiving, but even giving you instructions for how to grind it and make patties.

While her and Chris may entertain family that eat turkey and they’re expected to cook it, considering her track record, she should probably be avoiding talking turkey patties on such as widely read blog.

Better yet, put some recipes up there for Tofurky patties! And make it for your house guests too.

REM’s Michael Stipe, Peter Buck Have Vegetarian Code Words

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, November 21st, 2008 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

2008 Voodoo Experience - Day 3

Singer Michael Stipe and guitarist Peter Buck of the musical group REM are both vegetarians, so it shouldn’t come as a surprised that they’d be concerned about the food options while on tour, whether it’d be backstage or in a hotel.

When Stipe and Buck took part in a discussion before a show about how much fruit and vegetarian food was going to be at an after party, a journalist joked that maybe these terms meant something else. In the world of rock and roll, there are often code words for drugs, alcohol, and women.

Nope. Fruits and veggies really do mean fruits and veggies. Boring, but true.

“It’s about respect,” Buck said, referring to ensuring vegetarian options were available.

Stipe once owned a vegetarian restaurant and juice bar in Athens, Georgia, where the group all met up as students. It closed, but he is now the owner of the building which houses The Grit, a successful veg eatery in the same town.
